I've been using Linux since early 2000 and I won't go back to Windows
(at least on my personal hardware). I dropped gmail for anything other than my Android device login. I use Brave as my browser. Tutanota for
my email. I don't install things like Facebook on my phone - because
they can, and do, track your movements (that's why they push for you to install Messenger).

I've been using Linux since 2010. Joe S (patriotic Joe) has recently joined the club also.

I have a private email server set up with Postfix (open source email server for Linux.) With Postfix, I'm able to send/receieve email with a simple text-based email client called Mutt. But I have yet to properly configure Dovecot (for IMAP) and Roundcube (for webmail.) Once I get that stuff working I'll be ready to cut the cord from gmail.

Am I invisible? Certainly not. But I'm significantly less public than most people.

Good. Less is more. Once I get this email server up to par, my only potential spies will be the owners of the web hosting company that I use, but I doubt that they'd care to read my personal email.

I thought about doing that, but I'm too lazy. :)

    You never know.

    Chekhov's Gun Rule
This concept was popularized by Russian playwright and author Anton Chekhov. According to this principle, if a gun is placed on the mantle in the first act of a story, it should be fired by the third act.

Just because they don't want to read your email today doesn't mean they won't want to read it by the third act.

    Chekhov's Gun Rule

It's not the hosting company who will want to read my mail, but it's the other elitists who will try to infiltrate the hosting companies (another institution for them to ruin.)

I expect that some day the elitists are going to shut down the internet in favor of some private new protocol anyway ("Dear customers: due to climate change, which affects women and gulls, everyone must now use Googlenet instead of the internet.")

It's coming.. our days on the internet are numbered.

Exactly. Or the Gov't who steps in with a "warrant" to tell your hosting company to give over your information - and not be allowed to tell you that it happened.

I expect that some day the elitists are going to shut down the internet
in favor of some private new protocol anyway.

    I doubt that because:
    1. The people who are intelligent enough to do that, simply won't. Or will subvert it in some way where it won't work correctly. Remember that Elitists are dumb.
    2. The Elitsts are a very small percentage of the population. Having 99% of the population pissed at you all at the same time is a really bad life choice.

I felt some reassurance when I saw an ad on TV for Safari browser. Maybe the web is here to stay for now, but how difficult would it be for the average person to adapt to a world where the google play store replaces the web browser?

A class of people are being designed to think that they have to use an app for everything. Like, "I want to know what time Walmart closes so I'm gonna have to download the Walmart app."

It's only a generation away. I already use F-Prot on my Android devices to install software. I never use Google Play anymore. And while that's hard for the "average" person to do today, it won't be as the "average" person gets more tech savvy.

There's always been stupid people and there will always be stupid people. We just need to create systems that don't allow stupid people to hurt others.
