Hey All!
The latest release of tin (v2.6.4) now does not work with Smapinntpd or Jamnntpd (the previous release did), and I'm not sure why just yet. It
gets the groups as well as displays the number of new messages,
subscribes, etc, but when you try to view the list of articles it shows
a blank screen and marks all messages read when you back out of the
article list.
This began within the past year of tin snapshots, but I couldn't figure
out which one, since snapshots were always replaced with new ones, and
the code isn't up on github or anything. I waited to report anything
until there was an actual public release to see if anything would change during that time, and it hasn't.
I haven't been able to view or create any error logs yet, except that
"Xref" isn't used by the server which may slow things down in tin (I
don't think that's the problem since the old version reported this,
also), and this new version does indeed work fine with Synchronet's NNTP server, as I'm using that to post this message.
slrn (hasn't been updated in awhile) and Thunderbird (who's NNTP code probably hasn't been touched in awhile, either) both work fine with Smapinntpd/Jamnntpd still. So something has changed in tin, but I think
it's safe to guess the problem probably lies in Smapinntpd/Jamnntpd's
aged code, since the developers of tin are _very_ keen and strict to the standards they follow, and Smapinntpd/Jamnntpd was basically created for Fidonet-specific usage.
If anyone cares to try it out and possibly help debug, the latest
version can be found at http://tin.org and will need to be built for
whatever platform you're going to use it on.
Regards,
Nick

I haven't used tin before, but I see nothing like this with jamnntpd or smapinntpd.

The version you are using is:
tin/2.6.4-20240224 ("Banff") (Linux/6.8.0-51-generic (x86_64)).
The version I noticed these issues on is:
tin 2.6.4 release 20241224 ("Helmsdale") Dec 24 2024 07:45:47
Did you grab the latest version directly from the website? Or did you
have to venture into the "variety of platforms" section, where basically nothing has been updated to the latest yet?
I first installed with "apt install tin". Now this is compiled from
the sources dated xmas eve.
Still seems to work quite ok..

Would you care to drop your tinrc in my inbound for me to take a
look at? Maybe I just have some setting enabled that isn't working
properly with jam/smapinntpd.
What command line are you using to start tin (maybe there is a
parameter there I'm using that is causing a malfunction)?
Also, are you using any jamnntpd specific login parameters after
your username (if so, which ones)?

Sure. My tinrc is pretty much the default.

"tin -A -g news.fidonet.fi"

Nope, just the name and passwd.
I saw the netmail with the file attach flag, but it's nowhere on my
system currently, unless I have to do something with Golded to grab it
out of the header, or something. I figured you'd just put it in a
filebox that would send it directly to my inbound.
I sent you a netmail. Maybe checking the servers themselves will tell the tale.
Could have been something I committed in the past that the new version of tin
doesn't like, since tin is the only client I use here (besides Thunderbird, but
I doubt NNTP features have been touched) that has been updated during this timeframe.

Damn linux. ;) I'll send it again.

Saw the mail, I'll get back to it tomorrow. ;)
