From Kc4zvw@VERT/WALLACE to ALL on Wed Jun 19 08:53:01 2024
    Hello,

In the '90 I ran an XBBS system on a 486 and SCO Xenix and a second
dialup line. When I could get affordable direct Internet access it was
sort of the end of running a BBS.

I find it interesting that the Fido-net is still around. Now trying to
figure out what software/tools to use today. I remeber that I used to
find PCBoard BBSes and RelayNews(RIME) was popular for tech types in the Jacksonville areas of North Florida.

    regards,

    David -- KC4ZVW

I would suggest Synchronet. It includes FIDO and QWK networking utilities built in, and runs on *nix.

RelayNet has been gone a while. Most networks that survived were FTN or
QWK based networks and not those based on proprietary software.

Relaynet was good for a while but it kind of drizzled out.
On a funny note, I was actually YELLED at for quoting on relaynet.

Ironic considering some of the goings on here in Dovenet lately. ;)

yeah maybe these no quoters can create their own msg network where it only makes sense to the one guy posting.

Believe they already have something like that in place in Fidonet in the Telegram related echo. Funny though, it's now just as dead as the rest of the echos there. Whoda thunkit?

I can't find anybody who carries it. i was talking on the telegram side.
it must look weird on the fido side.

    does your bbs carry it?

I don't carry the Telegram echo, but do carry LITRPG where a whole lot of
the traffic used to come from Telegram users. If they responded to a
recent message, it was not too difficult to follow. If they responded to a post that was days old (or older), I usually had no idea what they were
talking about and just skipped it. Others complained, and people
    eventually quit posting.

i think you have to quote on telegram to make it appear correctly. https://i.imgur.com/AcdFWI5.png
I'm just curious to see what it looks like.

I don't think it's the right pairing unless it's just someone posting articles. I have telegram paired to my irc server and it works out great.

oh i tried looking on your bbs but i can't find it due to how you organize everything together.

i know you like it that way, but it would be good for people like me if you would organize your nets into msg groups.

you could have both and synchronet has that cut and pasting.

I can't find anybody who carries it. i was talking on the telegram
side. it must look weird on the fido side.

To me, BBSing has been about long-form posting - it's a place to write
well thought out responses in more than 140 characters. Porting Fido to Telegram is interesting, and it fills a missing niche of FTN on a phone.

If you're looking for a Fido "fix" on a phone, the gated telegram groups
are nice. Posting from Telegram to Fido loses something - people
occasionally post image memes which is relevant to a microblogging
audience, but all a Fido reader sees is an image URL.

I'm my own case here, but downloading QWK packets and reading them with
    a console-based QWK reader is what I've done since the mid-90s. I've
tried NNTP, points, web-based fidonet forums and Telegram, but keep
coming back to QWK - despite some obvious limitations.

... Am I any closer to finding what I'm looking for?

So have you actually seen it? who carries it?
If it implimented correctly it would be decent. When i was on there it just seemed like I was posting from telegram onto fidonet and I wasn't seeing much fidonet posts in the history. I'm not sure, I left the group.

I think my implimentation is better where i connected telegram to irc.
I was going to gate discord as well, but i'm not a fan of discord.

The FIDONET.TELEGRAM echo *is* ported to and from Telegram. There is only one echo for it, as far as I know.
